Question: Rocco... I cannot lose weight. I
am not on any medications that would prevent me from losing weight. I have
changed my diet and cutout red meat and eat mostly salads, chicken, fish, fruits
and vegetables. I was working out 3 times a week and got discouraged after
doing this for 3 weeks and not seeing anything change - not even 1/2 pound came
off. I know exercise is key, but how long do I have to be exercising before I
see even a 1/2 pound come off? Also, how can I raise my metabolism outside of
building muscle? Christy, Independence,
Kentucky
Answer: I think I’m reading this
correctly...three weeks. You’ve been working out three weeks and you haven’t
even lost ½ of a pound. You have got to be f**kin’ kidding me! There are so
many things I can say but I’ll stay focused on the stupid question at hand. You
got discouraged after three weeks. I’m wondering if you get discouraged three
weeks after you start building a house, or restoring an antique car or maybe you
want to throw your child away in the garbage three weeks after he/she is born
because they can’t speak a word or they won't stop shitting in their diapers. I
think you may get my point. If not the point is that fat loss will take a
little longer than three f**ckin’ weeks, especially if you are lean mass
(muscle) deficient. You may need to build muscle before you lose any fat. So
in reality you may need to gain weight on that stupid metal thing they call a
scale. Throw the scale away and take a photo of yourself and tape it to the
mirror. You may also want to take measurements of several parts of your body
such as; your neck, chest, waist, hips, both thighs, calves and arms. This can
help gauge physical changes in your body. You may lose five to seven pounds of
fat and not change one tick on the scale. I know it’s amazing but true. Don't
let your scale fool you into thinking your body isn't changing because if you
exercise your body has to adapt and become stronger and more fit. That's just
the way it is.
Your second part of this question disturbs me more
than the first. You can not safely boost your metabolism without building
muscle. You obviously are referring to supplements or the like and if you’re
not then shame on you for not being specific. There will always be side effects
with supplements because their thermogenic effect causes a fever type response
in the body and it would be common sense that a “fever” is the first sign of
sickness. So do the work, be consistent and stop your f**Kin' whining.
